Transaction analysis & data protection

How Finton analyses your bank transactions

When you link your bank with BankID, Finton fetches transactions via Open Banking. The data is then processed automatically — so you get overview, patterns and prioritised insights without spreadsheets. This page describes both what the analysis does and how we protect your data along the way.

From bank line to insight — in five steps

The flow below is a simplified picture of how the product works. Individual steps may differ between banks, but the principle is the same: less manual work for you, a clearer overall picture in the app.

1. You link your bank with read access

You choose bank and accounts in the app and approve the connection with BankID. A regulated Open Banking partner forwards transactions to Finton with the read access you granted. Finton cannot move money or change anything on the account. More about the connection is on Open Banking in Finton.

2. Transactions are normalised

Banks send data in different formats. Finton converts transactions into a unified format with the fields the app needs — for example amount, date, currency, counterparty and category. Full raw bank files are not stored on identified transactions.

3. Enrichment and categorisation

An enrichment service helps interpret transaction text and link purchases to categories and industry signals. That lets you see food, housing, subscriptions and other trails instead of cryptic bank lines. A deeper explanation is on categorise expenses.

4. Patterns and insights

Once transactions are structured, Finton can surface anomalies, recurring costs, spending drivers and summaries — for example left-to-spend, home cost insights and Finton Score. Insights are automatically generated and do not constitute personal financial advice.

5. Optional AI chat

You can ask questions about your finances in an optional AI chat. A limited selection of transaction context may then be sent to our AI provider to generate answers. Chat messages are automatically deleted after 90 days.

How we protect transaction data

Analysis requires bank data — but we limit what is collected, how it is stored and who has access. This is a summary; the full policy is in our Privacy Policy.

  • Read access: Finton can read transactions but cannot initiate payments.
  • Data minimisation: we store normalised transaction fields — not full raw bank files on identified transactions.
  • Account numbers: only the last four digits are stored for display, not the full IBAN.
  • Pseudonymisation: transaction events are linked to a separate technical identifier, not directly to your email or name in the data store. That reduces risk during backup and export — but the data is still your personal data with us.
  • Storage in the EU: primary data storage is in Google Cloud, region europe-north2 (Finland).
  • Sub-processors: Open Banking partner (bank linking), providers for categorisation and enrichment, OpenAI (optional chat) and others listed in the Privacy Policy — under data processing agreements.
  • We do not sell your data to advertisers or data brokers.

Your control

You do not need to "trust blindly" — you can act directly in the app:

  • Disconnect individual accounts or the entire bank connection
  • Export your data (CSV/JSON) under Settings
  • Delete your account and all associated data
  • Clear AI chat by starting a new chat

Common questions about transaction analysis

What does it mean that Finton analyses bank transactions?

It means Finton imports transactions via Open Banking, normalises them into a unified format, enriches them with categories and patterns, and then shows overview, anomalies and insights in the app. Analysis happens automatically — you do not need to export files or enter purchases manually.

What data is used in the analysis?

Typically amount, date, currency, counterparty, category and account context from your linked accounts. Finton does not store your full account number — only the last four digits for display. Identified transactions are stored without full raw bank files.

Who helps Finton categorise transactions?

Bank linking is done via a certified Open Banking provider. For enrichment and categorisation, Finton uses trusted sub-processors under contract and only to deliver the service.

How long is transaction data stored?

Transactions and account data are stored until you delete your account. For insights and scoring, Finton normally does not use transaction data older than two years. Temporary unprocessed data may be automatically cleared within 30 days.

Is transaction data anonymised?

No — it is still personal data belonging to you. Finton separates identity from transaction events with pseudonymisation to reduce risk during export and backup, but we can link data to your account because we operate the service.

Can Finton move money or change anything on my account?

No. Finton has read-only access via Open Banking. The app can read transactions for analysis but cannot initiate payments, move money or change account settings.

Is AI chat included in transaction analysis?

AI chat is optional and separate. If you use it, a limited selection of transaction context may be sent to our AI provider to generate answers. Chat messages are automatically deleted after 90 days.

How do I remove my data?

You can disconnect individual accounts in the app, export your data or delete your entire account under Settings. More information is in our Privacy Policy at finton.app/privacy-policy.
